I have a 67 evinrude 40 hp selectric shift. I can get it started but it only runs a few minutes and dies. in that time it will start to backfire a little bit. any suggestions. I have replaced the points, coils, capacitors. I am also having problems with the water pump pumping water out of the water exhaust. I have replaced the waterpump and housing and also pulled the thermastat. help please

Hello Calhouse.
Sounds like spot of trouble there.Nothing serious though.
First things first.Get a manual. In the bottom lefthand side of this page you can find one.If you are used to technical manuals and working with machinery get either a clymer or a seloc. If that is not your strongest point concentrate on volume 1 Seloc. It will help you in a great way.
The coughing probably means that you are running your engine too lean. Choke the engine a bit so the mix becomes a bit richer and see what happens. If that does not help you may have to clean your carburator and the filters.Follow the instructions in the manual and keep us informed.
