Hey all, new to the site and hoping I could garner some information out of those more knowledgeable than I. If this is posted in the wrong section, please forgive me. I noticed some other topics dealing with serial numbers in this section, so I figured it would be okay. If that is not the case please let me know and I will move the thread to the appropriate area.
I am looking at buying an old Evinrude 9.5HP. Model# 9722M (Everything I see online says that a 9722 = 1967, haven't found anything that says what the "M" means), Serial # E08266.
When I look up that serial number on Texas Parks and Wildlife Ownership inquiry, it shows it as a titled 1969 85 HP Evinrude. Unfortuantely the Ownership Inquiry does not list a model number, just the year and the HP rating. I read that Evinrude changed their serialization in 1969, so it possible that duplicate serial numbers exist? Or did some one make a mistake when they had their 85 hp (which was most likely a model 85993 from what I can tell) titled?
In Texas, all boat motors, regardless of the year or HP have to have a title after they are sold. This went into effect in the 90's, so there are quite a few small older motors that do not have titles still, and probably even more that should have them, but no one bothered to take the time because its such a cheap motor. Since most of the motors were titled with a pencil tracing of the ID plate that was then sent to TPWD, I imagine that a few may have been mis-entered.
My main concern is just making sure that this engine can be made 100% legal, and that it hasn't been lifted off the back of somebody else's boat.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
