1967 500 Mercury 50 hp transom plate

I was wondering how do I remove the transom plate on this motor. I see the 4 bolts but looks like there is some kind of shaft going through the middle. Any help would be great.

Are you referring to the swivel bracket? If so, then yes, there is a shaft going through there - the shift shaft. Only way to get that out is to pull the powerhead so you can pull the shaft out through the top...

That is what I was wondering so if the power head is off what do I do then?
