I got her honed out. My local shop did it for $20. 99$ of the cylinder came out ok, but there is one small ridge on the cylinder wall where the ring used to stop - I don't really have the money to rebore so I'm probably gonna go with it.

I moved the connecting rods to the new pistons last night. I did pay attention and get them on exactly as thy were on the old pistons. Will it make any difference if the rods are flipped 180 on the piston or they symetrical?

a

Yes it will matter. It's critical that the little oil holes on the wrist pin end face up so that oil is fed (via "gravity") into the wrist pin bearing. Have a close look and you'll see what I mean.

You've got all the info you need to fit the con rod big end caps right?

ok - i'll take a better look at the con rods - I think it's all set up right - (with alot of vasoline for those dang bearings...that took a few trys)

I took some time before I took off the conrod caps to be sure they get back to the right rod and end. I've read about the scratch test for alignment. is there anything else i should be paying attention to?

btw. this forum is the most helpful thing i've found on the net - and I use it daily for my occupation. - thx again for the help and dealing with my ignorance.

Try and find someone with a ridge reamer. That little edge can break the new top ring when it hits the ridge on the up stroke.

Yup, I just wanted to make sure you had that about the scratch test. On my 33hp someone once just threw the caps on and torqued 'em down. I'm thinking of picking up "new" rods due to the nasty wear now.
Dealing with the ridge is outside my knowlege. I would feel better if it were gone myself (rental tool perhaps?), but it also seems I never really see much of a ridge formed on these old outboards.

the ridge is micro, less than .01" - I believe it was from the old piston ratteling around a bit and acted sortof like a ring stop. I could rebore it and buy a new piston/rod setup or I could try it out and if it breaks the ring then I could buy a new piston/rod setup and bore it out.

the problem is I already purchased new pistons for this bore...tough luck or poor planning - i'm not sure which

what's an edge reamer?
loup

Paul,

Well, I had a great install. Everything went real smooth and now I have 90-95psi per cylinder after 2 hours of idling in the trashcan. I think I'm ready to take her out to the lake to break her in.

I do have one more question tho. Somehow in the process, the choke solenoid decided not to work anymore. Can you fix these simple little units? They are a simple little electro-magnet! and what would kill one?

thx for everything...

loupis

Good news on that!

The choke solenoid is a simple electromagnet that is grounded through it's casing. If my memory serves me it should be 6.5 ohms from the tab on it to ground. Check that the tab gets +12v when the choke switch is pressed and that the the casing is well grounded. Plastic washers on the carb's mounting studs could conceivably insulate the entire carburetor, but often trouble is caused by corrosion on the solenoid casing itelf between it and the brass strap.

There isn't much to kill them except if they're accidently left on for a long while. There's no fix for them but fortunately they're very common having been used on 18hp and Big Twins, etc.

Hey guys,

We'll fishin season is alive and well again in montana. I took the boat/motor out today for a run to the end of the lake and after a blown out tire on the trailer, a really cold soaker rain storm during 4 hours of fishin we decided to go home. Therein lies the problem. She seemed to be runnin pretty good...11 mph down the lake, but near the end of the journey she sped up to 20mph and actually planed the boat out. Then she ran out of gas.

Now I'm pondering if there is a carburation problem. why would the engin surge to max speed as it runs out of gas.

btw. We made it home on the minkota.. (2.2 mph.)

any thoughts here would be appreciated.

loupis

when running out of gas it starts to run leaner, maybe you've been running to rich.
