Looking for idea's. So far I have changed the distributor, rebuilt the carbs, and redid the harness assy. The compression on all cyl. are within 5 P.S.I. around 130. I checked the spark it is strong.New fuel. The motor won't start but does act like it's trying. I am going to order rebuild kits for the fuel pumps today. It acts like its not getting fuel.Should it start and idle until the fuel runs out of the float chamber? Or will it not even start without the fuel pumps working properly? The pumps really did not to appear to be in that bad of shape. Also getting a squirt bottle today for mixed gas. The choke solinoid is working fine, and closing all the way. Don't know what else to try. I think this forum is GREAT! Let me know of any ideas Thanks

Blake, if you are certain the timing is right, try the spray bottle.
If You can keep it running by spraying fuel into the carbs, there ya go. You can remove the hose from the pumps to the carb, and turn it over. You should get pulses of fuel (all over the place, but at least you'll know they are working).
Check that the timing is set at zaro at TDC on the piston, flywheel, and distributor. It will then start, but you will have to use a timing light after this.
But it should run well enough to adjust low speed timing. As long as no changes were made to the linkage, the high speed timing will be allready sert, and track accordingly. If not, all you need to do is take the light with you and a pilot on your next trip (to adjust at WOT).

Thanks 12Footer, I had the dist. replace at dealer, assumed the timing was correct. will check it out this afternoon. Thanks for the quick response. I know the motor is old and needed alot of work, but it was free. Should push my 16 1/2 foot skeeter pretty good. Thanks again!!

Well 12Footer, you were right on. The timing was set past tdc. Set at tbc and with a squirt of fuel it started. I let it run for about 30 minutes so I guess the fuel pumps are ok. Went to set the idle screw, but when I got it to run smooth the engine began to race. Backed off the idle stop, but the distributor would not stay, kept creeping up. Just about to shut her down and I noticed smoke coming from the other side of the engine, turned out to be a hose, some kind of pcv hose I think. An occasional puff of smoke. Gave up for the night. Thanks for the help!!!!

After trying to start it remove a spark plug, see what it looks like ( is it wet with gas) If so I would check the timing.

Remove the fuel line after the pump put it in a glass jar, try to start it gas should fill the jar.

A few more ideas for you. Good luck! :(
