Naw Mi duckdown your fine

When I first got into this whole boating/outboards scene I got a Seloc with the boat for the XR4 that was on it. While it got me off the ground I quickly realized that it was missing stuff here and there and it was frustrating. That frustration did have me close to that "In to the campfire" feeling. :)

Your right with the older Merc, I'm restoring a 1956 Mark 6 and Selocs don't even have one for it. Earliest Seloc I have is from 1965-1989.

Yeah let us know. When you said $5, I typed "$5 Mercury Service manual" into google.

ReadManuals.com came up and it's got me curious. Is that the site you used?

Well this manual is a lot more detailed than the SELOC. But, under remove/replace rectifier it just says "unbolt it from engine." No picture lol. I'm just going to make my own bracket.

Serial number is 2111400.

If someone has this engine and could post a couple pics of under the cover, I will love you forever.

4cyl wiring.jpgHere's the wiring diagram, the rectifier looks pretty bad but it might be OK, the mounting bolt is ground and it has to be grounded to work. It looks like you have a magneto ground wire hanging loose that should be attached to the mag. frame. The points are .008" and I would bet that the condenser is crap and the points need cleaning and adjusting.

Cool thanks for the info and link. I have that diagram. I just don't know where it goes on the motor. It can be grounded anywhere, I just wanted to put things where they belong.

Isn't there a bracket that the cowl knob locks into? I haven't seen it in your pics; I'm pretty sure it bolts to that.

Yea, it bolts to that. Also, that unconnected hose (right of lower carb) should connect to a drip tray that is on that bracket. It carries away residual fuel to the outside. In addition, your manual choke is located on the bracket. This pic shows the bracket.

Sorry man I didn't catch your question about the manual. I got mine from recrepairinfo.com.

Well I ordered a new ignition switch assembly and cut out the old wiring. Re-soldered and heat shrunk everything and now it starts right up as normal. I have to figure out how to put everything back in the control box and still have to change the impeller and replace a couple of fuel lines. I've been crazy busy and still have a ways to go on the boat itself. :)

thanks for that mate, good to see it's still moving forward, we know what it's like playing with older boats and motors, mostly fun but occasionally a pain in the b..
son has bought one, will look nice when painted up a bit
hope you don't mind a question about them,
do you know whether a PTT from another model will fit on them, would prefer it to look like it was factory fitted, even if it wasn't LOL
l did ask myself in another thread but it doesn't look promising...doesn't really matter though,
good luck with yours
cheers

Re: 1966 Mercury 650 Help Putting Back Together.

This thread is like a godsend. LOL. I have the same motor and a similar problem where the past owner was fiddling around with things and either realized he was in over his head or just didnt care. Didnt tell me about the work he did on it. Lucky for me the Powerhead is in amazing running condition. I replaced the plugs, solenoid, and did a general clean up and service of it. It actually runs great. Takes a little to get started but once started for a bit, restart is instant.

My problems are with the lower unit. There were clear signs that he had it apart. It stopped spitting water not too long after I got it (it hasn't been in water since I got it but I used earmuffs when working on the power head). I am also extremely suspicious on what he did with the gear assembly as the prop shaft has a strange amount of slop to it. I am thinking he missed a couple parts when he put it back together. Once I figured out he has clearly had it apart and didnt take much care in putting it back together, I decided there was no way I was taking it on the water without taking that lower unit apart. Good thing I did. took off the lower leg (which a couple of the bolts were barely on) to find that 3 of the 4 bolts to the water pump were only about 1/4 screwed on. Impeller was in shreds and one gasket was missing in the water pump. I found a good site to order these parts from and the water pump shouldnt be a problem.

What my biggest problem right now is getting the bearing carrier out of the lower unit. I do have the seloc manual and have had no issue figuring out what applies to my motor and what doesnt. Seems very cut and dry but i will be getting the factory manual as well. I know how the bearing carrier assembly comes out - it pulls straight out, propshaft and all. But my issue is that it is seized in there. Any tips on how to get that assembly out? once i get everything apart, I will be able to figure out what im missing. Most things in the lower unit seem to be in good shape. Just needs a good cleaning and service.

also, I need a couple good places to order parts. I found one place that has everything for my waterpump and clearly shows pictures of the part. But I was looking to get a replacement bearing carrier and they dont have it. here is the place I found:
