Now that she is all tucked in bed for the winter, I am going to have the carbs rebuilt. Are they hard to remove? I do not have a manual for this motor yet, and won't be able to get one before I need to remove them. Can you guys help me? Thanks...

As you know you really need a manual, that said to remove the carbs on your engine you will have to start by rermoving the starter and magneto to get to the carb mounting nuts then remove the bolts that retain the filter covers and fuel lines

Is there somewhere online that I can find step by step instructions?

How long should I expect it to take?

It's pretty easy..........
1. remove the cowl
2. remove the front and top support brackets
3. remove starter
4. remove coil
Should be able to get to the carbs then. You can get an exploded view at www.dougrussell.com

Okay, starter off no probel. It's getting to the nuts on the other side that is proving difficult... any suggestions?

Hi Andy,
Although I'm not versed in your particular motor, I can tell you... You got to be very imaginative with your tools. I am almost done completely rebuilding my '69 Merc 800 and I've never rebuilt an outboard before. One set of tools I found to be helpful are Crows-foot sockets. They are kind of like an open end wrench, but fit on a ratchet. I Also found a factory manual is a must have. Consider getting their accompanying parts catalog too. Seloc manuals are OK. I used both, The Merc manual is geared toward the professional, and Seloc is more like a Chilton's. In my last post I gave you a link for exploded views.... Here's a better one, http://www.crowleymarine.com/

You can zoom in on the illustration to see excatly how things come apart.

thanks Ed.

Well, I finally got the magneto off. After I fought with it for 2 hours, I read on another forum that the shift linkage rod gets in the way, and shifting it into forward gear would help... sure enough, dropped right out.

The carbs were pretty straight forward to remove, but i did notice that you cant take the nuts all the way off until you break the carbs free from the block due to lack of clearence.
