Picked up a deal on a boat/motor/trailer last year and stored it away. Started looking at it recently and the boat is going to scrap...(tri-hill plastic Crestliner) but the 64-66 Merc looked to be complete, and not frozen so I removed it and started to play with it on the weekend. I was really pleased that it fired right up on the muffs and is idling very nicely and pumping water etc. As far as I got so far...will do the compression check, impeller replacement etc later.
Now for the PTT..... It is not working. (by the way it is the older common Merc rectangular in boat reservoir/pump with 4 hydrollic lines to two trim cyls on the outside of the engine.)

Tested so far:
1) jumped 12 V directly to the BLUE (hot wire) going from output large solenoid post to the trim motor and it spins away happily.
2) jumped 12 V directly to the small post with the blue wire coming from up/dwn/trailer control box and the solenoid clicks away as I would expect.
3) tested the control switches .... 12v red coming in is fine . The control has 3 buttons... In (Red and green wire) Trailer (purple from trim limit switch & red jumped inside from the In button. Trim( Blue wire from Limit Switch and purple jumped from the Trailer button)

I am not sure what/how else to test in the switches or pump. Thoughts?

Thanks

I forgot to mention that I had filled the reservoir with fluid. Thanks for the suggestion and the instructions though. I have a few different Merc repair manuals as well but I am still stumped. I was thinking that maybe the solenoid is bad because when I apply power to the small post ( I call it the start post on a starter solenoid) and it clicks it should spin the trim motor just as it would a starter right? Now why the trim controls aren't applying that same 12v to the solenoid is another issue.

I had the same problem so I drilled out the 4 rivets, cleaned the internal contacts then used screws to put it together with some sealant. You can also take the switches apart after removing them from the housing and clean them.
