1966 johnson 33hp

i HAVE AN 1966 jOHNSON 33HP THAT HAS 107 compression in both cylinders.It was recomended that i replace the head gasket,when i removed the head the piston has side movement ,should i be concerned about this. The pistons for this motor are discontinued and the only ones available are in the nabourhood of 190.00 dollar each so im told.

It is supposed to have a surprising amount of sideways slop at the top end of the piston. (piston taper). I wonder why somebody told you to go in there??

Great old motor. I used to have a '66 33 hp myself. The compression on your motor was actually pretty good. Oh well, what's done is done. I would install a new head gasket and verify the compression again. If it's as good, or better than before and both cylinders are withing 10% of each other, you should be fine. Once the compression is confirmed, you can move on to the spark and fuel system. The spark should jump a 1/4" gap using a proper gap tester and Champion J6C spark plugs. Once the spark is sufficient you can move on to fuel. Your motor will nun on 50:1 mix, but I err on the side of caution and run 24:1 in my vintage '60s era motors. It's cheap insurance and won't effect your performance any. I run it in my '66 20hp with almost no smoke while running at idle for hours at a time in the manatee zones.
