1965 Merc 3.9-1

I’ve got a 1965 Merc 3.9-1 apart. Does anyone know whether the A-32-32077 “Tube, water outlet” is supposed to be a tight fit in the A-23-31792 “Sleeve, guide – inlet tube” providing a water-tight connection, or just a loose fit that would allow water to leak past the connection? Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

There is a plastic guide tube to assist with assembly.----That tube does nothing after that.----The grommet inside the pump seals the tube.-----That plastic tube helps the novice to simply slide the bottom end into place.
