I have a 1965 I think?, Johnson Seahorse 60HP Outboard. Model VXL-110. Just started working on it. I picked it up really cheap with a older Fiberform. I was able to get the engine to crank over, with some time and oil in the cylinders.

No I'm not getting spark. I don't have a battery connected, but with the knowledge I believe I have I shouldn't need a battery when cranking it over by hand. I pulled the points apart and cleaned them and of course lost a part. I lost a very small piece that I believe is a magnet. It goes in the middle of the points and rests on a very small spring. Can any one tell me what this does and where I can get a new one if I need it. Also I'm going to try and clean up the ignition system, as there is some corrosion in it. Any tips.

This website is great. Thanks for the help.

Huh?? I know of no such thing in the middle of the points. Are you talking about the carbon brush and spring in the center of the distributor cap? It is part number 580291 from a Johnson or Evinrude dealer.

You are correct, it will run without a battery by hand cranking it. Make sure the key is turned on.

Yes that is exactly what I'm talking about. Sorry I explained it wrong. Thanks for the part number that is a big help. Is the carbon brush needed? If so what does it do?
