Re: 1965 evinrude

Remove the prop, and send it to a prop shop. You have, no doubt, spun the hub out. It's like a slipping clutch on a car. The shop can repair this for 30buks or so.

massman<br />what do you mean by "buck"<br />if you give it just a little gas it goes ok and then a little more and it starts to "bang and jump" sounds like the moter is going to jump off, then you may have a bad clutch dog in the lower unit<br />Richard

The prop would be suspect if it has a thrust hub design.<br /><br />But, I think that the two-cylinder OMC engines still had the shear pin props through the 1960's.

Lark40, you are right on. I missread the vintage. I read it as 85.<br />It has a shear pin.Samey-same tho, remove prop and replace the pin (if sheared).

Re: 1965 evinrude

Rwise may have nailed it. If your shear pin and/or prop hub checks out, it may be the clutch 'dog' in the lower unit. Since you describe it getting worse, I'm afraid it may be. I had a 1971 18hp with the same symptoms. The clutch dog ears will ramp, and leave you slapping in and out of gear when throttle is applied. The fix ain't cheap...new gears and clutch.(Unless you want to pin the gears in forward-only mode) :D Hopefully your trouble is only a shear pin! Keep us posted.

Re: 1965 evinrude

well yes when you are going along it looks like the engine is going to jump of the back of the boat . i have the cog gears in a five gallon bucket and they look good no teeth broken.but rwise brang up a question another thing that happens is while i am run the motor will just sound like it kick it self out of gear and i have to throttle down and kick it to neutral and back agian and it goes back to a drive or forward motion . :) so i shoiuld look at the hub of the prop and make shure that it is not damaged in anyway thankyou for the info ;)

Re: 1965 evinrude

As for the prop, pull off the nose cone and check the shear pin. It is either is in one piece or it isn't. That's all there is to check out on your prop, as you don't have a thrust hub to check.<br /><br />So, the next thing would be the clutch dog, as mentioned in other posts. It probably has some wear and slips out under speed.
