If you have spark directly from the main HT coil terminal, the rotor is shorted out to the metal shaft upon which it sits... replace the rotor.

Re: 1965 evinrude 60 no spark

What Joe said is very valid. But if you are not getting spark from the coil, 90% of no-spark problems are caused by dirty points. How did you clean them? You need to take them out, and polish each contact shiny bright, then reassemble and set the gaps to .020" at widest opening.

Needless to say, you have to remove the belt pulley to do that. Align the timing mark with the switch button before removing the belt. Then DO NOT rotate the flywheel till it is back together.

EDIT: If somebody has already screwed up the timing, the flywheel timing mark should be aligned with the marks on the recoil starter and cylinder water cover when the magneto pulley is aligned with the switch button.

Re: 1965 evinrude 60 no spark

You have started at least three threads on this motor, with conflicting information. 60753A is indeed a 1967. Previously, you said it was a 60573A, which is a 1965

IF IT IS a 60753A, it is battery ignition, with points inside the distributor cap. And it must be connected to the wiring harness, and a charged 12V battery or it won't have spark. There is a special resistance wire built into the wiring harness, so don't gerry rig it unless you know what you are doing. And all that may be changed anyway, since you have subsitituted a car coil. See what happens when you start substituting parts?

Re: 1965 evinrude 60 no spark

first of all I am vary vary sorry for the conflicting info. the number is my dyslexia. yes it is a 1967. I have been reading the forum to try to fix it and that is how I got the year. I also seen a post about the coil. I still have the old coil and will see if I can get the oms for it and test it. I have never posted on any forum be for, so again I am sorry for the confusion. The wire harness is still connected to the engine but was cut were the batteries cables come out of the harness. the ends for the battery are still their
yellow goes to the starter sillanoid,
gray goes go to neg side of coil.
yellow with red stripe to pos side coil,
green goes on top of starter silanoid with pos battery,
red with white stripe electric choke

I did as you said, I removed and shined up the points put um back in and set them to .20, wow I haven't touched points in decades.

thanks
peace mike

Do you, or do you not have spark at the main high tension lead of the coil?

Re: 1965 evinrude 60 no spark

12Volt battery. 70 ampere hour minimum. Yeah, I know, a lot of them don't use that rating system any more. Just use a decent quality 12V battery.

You can use that car coil if you use a suitable resistor (or no resistor) with it....depending on what was required in it's intended application. The special built-in resistance wire MAY be ok, if that is what it needs.

EDIT: Those "yellow" wires in the harness started life as white, and probably have discolored with age.

O my I dont know what to say I been reading through the forum days and days, I dont know how to thanx you , So I'll just say it thank you so much, you Sir are THE "BEAST"

Is the special coil wire between the harness pig tail in the engine housing and the coil?

I will put this mess I bought back together and see about spark.

As you can see I got someones mess and because of You I may get this old girl running again

yes typo I have six years of collage and cant spell a lick.

sorry to bug you again but at this point from reading the forum I can sum this up to a wast of time if I dont do as the experts say.

frist; I have put the wires back together but the tac. is missing. I also put the old coil back on. I pull started with plugs out and I got big sparks and loud snaps from the plugs. I put the plugs back in and the wires back on.

I am afraid to do more to it at this point because its still on the boat and its not in water. dont want it to over heat, do damage to water pump, or over rev. and I think I read about a vacuum safety?

thanks again mike
