I am having a hard time determining where my water intake is on this engine which runs beautifully. Below the prop facing the rear is an opening with a screen pointing down and on the side above the prop is a small rectangular plate that has a screw. muffs really wouldn't fit on any of them. Although the manual says you do not have to flush the engine, I would like to. Since this says this is why I guess the manual doesn't show you where the intake is.

I see once I'm running on the water where the water comes out of the exhaust but I do not see water coming out when I start the engine in a bucket. In neutral the water in the bucket is very agitated but I do not see the water coming out of the exhaust opening like when I'm on the water.

What I'm calling the exhaust is a square opening facing the rear above water level and what I think is the intake a square opening just below the cavitation plate and it has a screen facing down.

Any help in understanding this would be appreciated.

I just took apart a 1976 Johnson with the same water intake you described. The rectangle on one side and the screen below are connected and they are both intakes. Don't know why you're not getting flow in the bucket though if it's getting it out in the open. Just make sure you have enough water to cover both intakes. It the water is filled with air bubbles, maybe the pump can't get primed?

Replace "bucket" with "trash can" or "barrel" and you'll be fine. The water level has to be quite high up the leg for the pump to work correctly.

Totally agree here. Fill the water level to where it touches the lower shock mounts and you'll be fine.
