1965 9.5hp sportwin wont run without choke

Hi all,

Well, I rebuilt the carb and did a tune up. The engine finally starts, but I cant get it to stay running without the choke. I started with the slow speed needle at 1 and a half turns out and it would run for a few minutes with the choke fully out. I adjusted it in 1/8 and it wouldnt start at all so I decided to adjust it out. IT will start and sputter without choke for a few seconds, or if the choke is engaged it will run fast for a few minutes and then die. Please help! I came out with the needle more than 2 full turns, from seat. Other than not smoking so much and running a bit longer on choke, it still wont run without the choke! What do I do???

A weird as it sounds, you're running rich. Did you replace the float? I'll bet not.

As I recall my 73 - 9.5 needle is turned out about 2 3/4 turns. Don't be afraid to turn yours out some more. If that doesn't do it I would suggest further carb. cleaning is required. Did you pull the main jet? It is in the bottom of the bowl behind and inline with the bowl drain. Best of luck. Rick.

Thank you guys. The carb rebuild kit did come with a new float which I installed. I didnt pull the main jet because i was afraid to damage it. I did clean it pretty thoroughly with carb cleaner and it seemed to be flowing through smoothly. I'll try coming off the seat more. Hope that works.

Hey, just a couple of comments........the above suggestions made were very good.

- Remove the motor cover

- Get a fan and put it blowing close by so that it blows the exhaust away from the motor and the barrel. The 9.5 hp motors (1964 to 1973) due their compact style sit low in the barrel and are very prone to inhaling there own exhaust and run very poorly in the barrel. The the motor sits low in the barrel.

- Try resetting the low speed needle and turn it back out to 1 1/2 turns out then go from there.

- is that fuel old....has it been sitting around for a while? Might want to mix a fresh batch of fuel/oil (50:1) ratio. (old fuel in the tanks may accumulate water and will cause your motor to run like crap!!)

mix 8 ounces of TWC-3 oil 2cycle oil with 3 gallons of gas.

- Make sure the air vent cap is open on the tank if is plastic tank.

- Make sure the primer bulb on the fuel line is connected to the tank and not the motor (the arrow on the bulb should be pointing to the motor and that is the direction of the fuel flow)

- Squeeze the the primer bulb on the fuel line until it is somewhat firm.

- When you first start the motor, place the tiller selection around start and pull the choke. Let it run for a little while then push in the choke.

***if goes to die, then you have a lean condition with your carb, so make the carb setting richer by turning the slow idle knob counter clockwise in increments of 1/4 turn and wait about 20 to 30second for the motor to react.

- Also if does not seem like the motor is getting enough fuel, then the fuel pump may be bad, so try pumping the bulb while it is running and if the running condition improves then that is a big clue.

**Try raising the tank above the level of the motor with something (stable) and that will allow fuel to be delivered by gravity. (Another clue your fuel pump might be bad)

If all fails then you may have to revisit your carb and recheck your float level and also check that float level is correct.


The extra attachment is the known 3 areas of exhaust leaks with this make and series of motor.
