This engine has not ran in about 2 years. I Changed the water pump with Kit , thermostat, and blew out all lines with 80lbs air. She started right up. I have it in a barrel plus muffs for pressured water but its seems that all that comes out of the exhaust is mist, steam, and smoke. I dont remember if this was normal . Should it be a stream ?? The mist is very hot and in about 1 min idle the block (where plugs screwed in) is to hot to touch. It doesent seem like the pump is working well.
Thanks so much

I have the same engine and while running it spits a spray of water out not a steady stream. It also runs very hot to the touch and I believe it's normal for this engine.

One thing that bothered me is the kit i got had two bearing looking things oil seals. One fit in the bottom housing . The second one seems to fit on the top housing on the outside of it over the shaft. But there was something different in there perivously . It was brass like almost a button snap looking thing and then a rubber bushing. they dont fit with the new kit oil seal . Theres not a good diagram of the pump assembly is there ?
thanks again

Take the muffs off. Your engine won't ware muffs properly. By putting the muffs on it while it was in the water you were probably doing more harm than good. That water pump shouldn't have any trouble pumping on it's own in a bucket. And yes your 9.5 will sputter out water. But if steam is coming out you may have an overheating motor. Try it in the bucket without muffs and see what happens.

It is not normal for the head on any 9.5 to be too hot to touch; so fix the thrermostat. When the 9.5 is working properly, you get a steady spitting of water out the exhaust relief and varying temperature as the thermostat opens and closes. If you have steam, you may have blown a head gasket.

Be sure that the water in your bucket is as high as the water pump, which means you will be almost to the midsection.

The primary entry for your cooling water is the small screen above the propeller, so when the propeller is turning, it pushes water into the pump. You do not have that advantage with a bucket, so you need to keep the pump itself under water.

I have the same engine and my experience with them is that they run hotter then my other OMC motors, they need a new impeller to pump well. My motors have never put out a solid stream of water, more like a wet exhaust - hot air and lots of water. The cooling probs that I have had with my motors have been slit/crud in the water passages, the thermo's needed replacing, when bucket running, my motors like to have about 3 inches of water above the anti vent plate, but when running on my boat, it didn't seem as critical. Good luck.

Check the connector on the shift rod. You have to have the screw all the way out when you reconnect it to grab the rod correctly. Click the thumbnail.

Yes, that appears to be the problem. The indent at the top of the shift rod should be moved up where you can see through the clamp where the bolt goes through and not any of the shift rod.
