Just bought a 1965 9.5. The motor has been sitting awhile and have no record of maintenance. I can get the motor to run for a few seconds by pouring gas in the carb but it cuts out very quickly. Not familiar with the motor or outboards and was wondering possible causes. Also how do you take the carb apart and clean it? Any other maintenance suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Most likely, the high speed orfice plug (jet) is clogged up. It is in the very bottom of the carburetor, deep in a hole behind the slotted plug. You have to remove and disassemble the carb and use some carb cleaner to get it squeeky clean. If you don't know how to do it, time to get yourself a service manual.

The carburetor needs a OEM kit # 382048 to be rebuilt properly because the floats fail frequently as they are made of cork with a shellac coating.

The parts diagrams for 1968 and later are available on-line, but you should try to get a service manual for one of the 9.5 Evinrude or Johnson models. They are found on ebay frequently, or you can buy new reproductions from Ken Cook.

Welcome to iboats!

Important Tip:
Your motor is a 2 stroke design. It needs oil mixed with the gas for proper lubrication. Running it on straight gas will kill it.

Definitely get a rebuild kit with a new float and I like to soak the carb in (blaster) for 3+ days before the final spraying and then re-assemble... You may go ahead and replace the points and condencer ($20) at this time...These are great running motors and worth the extra effort....With a manual and us on iboats this will be no problem for you:)

after you get the top half going, don't forget to replace the lower unit lube and replace the impeller.

I would also suggest using extreme care when removing the screws to the carb, the cowling system on the 9.5s eats screws, nuts and anything else the happens to fall in it. the steps i use when taking the carb off are.
1. un hook the choke rod from the carb - usually a plastic retainer there.
2. either unscrew the slow speed needle and take off the knob, so that you can check the point of the needle and clean it out. you'll also need to replace the packing - which will come with your carb kit.
3. disconnect the fuel hoses going to the carb.
4. now you can start unscrewing the screws that hold the carb to the manifold. pay attention which screws go where as there are a few long ones and a few short ones. also you'll have to move the mag plate around because it'll be in the way.

this is just a general idea on what I do, I may have left out a step or two, but really get a manual, it will help tons - Me personally, I stay away from the CD manuals on ebay - I like the real thing.
