1965 6HP Gearcase Not Sealing

Hi, I put a new gearcase seal kit on this motor in 2017, but oil was very milky when changing it this year. When I put some air in it, I could see it leaking from under the bearing housing, rather than the seals. Took the bearing housing off and the gasket seemed to be disintegrated and separated into two, with the gasket sealer still intact on both sides.

There is a misaligned hole for the bolt near the water pump intake (it is also in bearing housing, so I presume it was a factory error). There's a small crack where (I assume) water could push through and wreak havoc on the gasket over time. I'm also not a fan of the super-thin gasket I received, it just doesn't seem very substantial for this application.

Any thoughts on a fix? JB weld while making sure mating surface remains perfectly flat with a piece of tape? Fill the cavity with 3M 847 or 5200? Cut a gasket from a sheet of cork? Thanks in advance.

Someone drilled out a broken screw.----Not from the factory.-----The plate is likely warped and the gasket will leak.----Did you replace shift rod O-ring in 2017 ?

Right, if the screw was stuck that makes sense. Yes, o-ring was replaced along with the prop/drive shaft seals.

Hmm, maybe I'll try to resurface the bearing housing on a piece of glass to take out warpage. It's got some pitting (this entire LU suffers from some pitting/corrosion), so I may look for another one. Just a little worried the chipped housing will degrade the gasket again, don't want to have to do this every year. Thanks!

Sorry ----I do not see any damage that would let WATER leak into the gearcase oil.

can you try to JB weld broken area ... drill & retap

as for gearcase pitting you could probably resurface it with some JB weld

KwikWeld Professional Size | J-B Weld

after a good sanding job.... clean all greases and dust mix up some JB and smooth it over the pitted areas let harden 24hr and sand smooth

prime with yellow chromate paint and finish coat

should be good enought for a few years.
