I have a 1965 Johnson 40 HP and could someone tell me what gap the points should be and the plugs. I had it running good but when out riding it seems like it is misfiring once in a while. Its like it skips a beat. Could this be a timing issue? When you are running wide open it does not occur as often.

Points .020", plugs .030". Timing is not adjustable. Are you sure it is a misfire, and not a hard "clunk"? The latter, often described as feeling like running over a log, is a clutch dog. But if it truly is a misfire, make sure the vacuum cut-out switch and safety switch are wired correctly. Also, try new plugs. Otherwise, all the usual stuff applies--coils, condensers, wires, etc.

Point setting is .020.Be sure the points are clean. What you may have is a lean sneeze. You might try a touch of choke if it helps then the carb may need a rebuild with attention to cleaning. You could try carefully adjusting the idle mixture starting one turn out from gently bottomed.Leaving the final adjustment slightly toward rich.
Be sure the stator doesn't wobble and does move smoothly through the full motion.

It is like a clunk. What is the clutch dog? I'm new at this boating stuff. We have rebuilt the carb and new plugs. Put it in a drum and it runs fine (in nutural) but when we got it in the water it wasdoing the clunking thing.

After talking to F_R more and explaining the problem was happening when it was in nutural and ideling he also said it was a lean sneeze. We adjusted the carb up and now it runs fine. Thanks steelespike and F_R for the advice. The only thing left on this project is to go fishing.
