Here's where I'm at.

I bought the boat of craiglist mainly for the trailer. (motor didn't run) Found out it was missing a ground cable to the kill switch so I hooked that up. (with much appreciated help from this forum)

Last week when I went out one of the bolts to the connecting rod that goes from the shifter to the lower unit fell out when I took it out on the lake to "try it" I ordered a new one, loctitied it in and dissembled the lower unit just to make sure the bolt wasn't stuck somewhere stupid. Once all that was done I took it out for a hour over the weekend for a "spin" and everything seemed to work great.

Today I went out to try and catch some early panfish. Things were going great until I went to move locations, about every 30 seconds the motor kinda "kicks" forward violently. There's a lot of exhaust coming from around the motor. What do could it be? Exhaust build up? Carb prob? Lower unit? Any advice would be appreciated

That kicking, feeling as though you hit an obstruction, is a worn out clutch dog and possibly the forward gear too. If you let it continue to do it, the forward gear will be destroyed if it isn't already.

Due to the age of the mtr replace both the fwd gear and shift dog. Also check all the shift linkage on the mtr for being worn or loose.

Be sure the shift cable moves it comepletely into gear.Probably not the problem but sure easier than a rebuild. You could disconnect the cable and try it by hand.
In the gearcase prop shaft there is a spring and 2 detent balls that I believe can cause clutch slip if worn or missing.
