Hi All,

I've inherited (from a friend's uncle) a 1964 Starcraft Starchief (18' aluminum hull cuddy cruiser). She's a really solid boat, and I have already had her on the Chesapeake a couple of times this past weekend. I can't say I'm restoring the boat, as I don't plan to research deeply and return it to the original outfitting, but I am in the process of revitalizing the boat for use by my family as a weekender. I decided to strip the paint and leave the hull as bare aluminum above the water line, but I can't find any evidence that sacrificial anodes were used in the past directly on the hull. Should I use any anodes (zinc, magnesium, aluminum/zinc alloy) to protect from corrosion? If so, is it best to just pick a spot under the water line, or is there a better/best spot? I imagine I would have to clean the aluminum under where the anode would be placed, and seal any holes (maybe with 4200?) that are made when securing the anode, is this right? Is there a great resource out there with how-to information for this sort of thing? We will trailer the boat, but we will be launching it primarily into salty water. Thanks in advance for your help.

I can't help you with any advice about anodes, but would like to see some photos of your Starchief.

Welcome aboard

Some pics would be great.

What motor does your Chief have? Normally the anodes on the motor/drive work fine.

It's too bad that b2barato isn't around anymore. He used a massive hull anode for some sketchy saltwater slips south of the border. post 602. I'm curious how that thing held up.

It's also too bad that half of the images of it were lost in the photobucket bait-n-switch.

Here's the internal bonding strap:

and here's an exterior shot of his stern:
