hi there,i am new to iboats and have a question. i have a 1964 johnson 90hp outboard and my coil is on its way out. i can see it's cracked now and i have problems getting speed from the boat also always have.my question is can i put a mallory canister coil on the motor 54,000 volt max ? its designed for a points system which is what i have on the boat and its cheaper by 100 dollers but it is actually for automotive use ? im thinkn it will help me get a nice hot spark which will help me speed up a bit with burning more of the fuel and not just dumping it, the coil has 2 wires just like the one on my motor as well.. any input would help thanks boaters :)

Re: 1964 johnson 90hp coil question

Not sure if you have the same ignition as my '63 75hp, but if so, then the automotive coil should work. I'm not 100% sure on that so perhaps somebody else can chime in. I do know that the ignition system on my motor is identical to an older automotive points-type system. One difference may be the spark plug leads. I believe that they are special in that they are copper core wires or such. When I replaced my leads, I bought OEM leads and didn't try to use anything automotive. Again, let's wait to see if anybody else knows for sure.
