1964 johnson 90hp coil question

hi there,i am new to iboats and have a question. i have a 1964 johnson 90hp outboard and my coil is on its way out. i can see it's cracked now and i have problems getting speed from the boat also always have.my question is can i put a mallory canister coil on the motor 54,000 volt max ? its designed for a points system which is what i have on the boat and its cheaper by 100 dollers but it is actually for automotive use ? im thinkn it will help me get a nice hot spark which will help me speed up a bit with burning more of the fuel and not just dumping it, the coil has 2 wires just like the one on my motor as well.. any input would help thanks boaters

Not sure if you have the same ignition as my '63 75hp, but if so, then the automotive coil should work. I'm not 100% sure on that so perhaps somebody else can chime in. I do know that the ignition system on my motor is identical to an older automotive points-type system. One difference may be the spark plug leads. I believe that they are special in that they are copper core wires or such. When I replaced my leads, I bought OEM leads and didn't try to use anything automotive. Again, let's wait to see if anybody else knows for sure.
