1964 johnson 18hp model fd-18e

I'm trying to change the impeller no this motor but can't get the lower unit off. I've taken the five bolts out but it seems like somthing this still holding it up where the shaft might go into the motor This is the first time that I have had this motor apart. Thanks for any advice.

does it come down a half inch or so then stop? If so shift linkage needs to be disconnected before completely removing lower unit.

yes the lower unit did drop down half inch of so. do i need to take the small plate off the side and remove the two small bolts.

I just looked at this diagram and it looks just like my 64 9.5 johnson that I just took the lower unit off of. There should be two bolts that go through a clamp looking thing holding two pieces of shift linkage together. One bolt will be almost unreachable and the other will be right there access-able. Should be a 3/8" socket and unbolt the bottom one that you can reach easily and then pull off the lower unit.

Should be just that one bolt to disconnect the shift linkage and then just give er a tug.

I took both bolts out a few days ago and tried to pull if off but if still seemed really hard to back free the motor had been seating for about 10 yrs without use.

How much force are you giving it. Mine was a bit snug but my shift linkage was just a bit tough to get free of the clamp. Mine took a good downward tug. Spray a little penetrating oil where you took the bolts out. The ends of the linkage are grooved to stay in the clamp. There may be a little corrosion.

I'll look at the motor tomorrow and will tug around on it alittle harder. thanks for all your help I'll give you an update tomorrow

got the lower unit off and that it what was keeping from coming off thanks again.

Ya after I posted that I saw what it was Zephyr. Cant believe I missed it lol. MPH glad it worked
