On a related note...
I thought I'd be cheap & clever and reproduce a missing capacity label for my pontoon.
I used a color laser printer because the ink is waterproof. Printed onto adhesive-back clear shipping label sheet. Came out perfect!
Then after just one damp night...

You needed to seal it afterwards with several very light coats of clear coat. Otherwise, the toner just sits on the surface, as you found out. Same goes for water slide decals.

Vinyl sign shop should be able to help in both regards - Cherokee label and your capacity plate.

I took a picture with measurements of the original decal on my trailer. Specified what color changes I wanted, and emailed all of it to this local Co.
They emailed back proofs, I accepted, and they made four for me.
You should be able to do like wise locally
Couldn't have been easier.

That's hilarious! Couldn't do that again if you tried, lol. Looks like pop art.

Maybe try again, but cover it with another sheet of clear adhesive film that's 1/4" larger in all dimensions.

I'll probably take another shot at it. This time on a white plastic sheet & sealed with acrylic.

Live & learn. The letters really were waterproof--they slid off the film like little tiles.
