I friend gave me this Johnson 40hp. (rkl-26r)
My question is what kind of wiring harness plugs into the one that is connected to the motor itself? ( there is a small lead of wire with a plug on the end)
And where do I get one?

Will it start with out it?

Re: 1964 40hp electric shift

Welcome to the iboats forums weinerdog.

Your engines original equipment included a separate "box" that mounted near the transom. In this box were the starter solenoid, voltage regulator (if equiped) and the juction for the leads coming from the ignition switch and warning light unually mounted on the dash. Yes it will start but won't shift unless you have the cables connected. You would also have to choke it to shut it down.

If you could go to the library and take a look at a service manual, most librarys carry the generics, look for a wiring diagram for your engine. You can also contact the link below and check on any parts you may need or check around your area dealerships for used parts.....don't think you will find new.

http://www.twincityoutboards.com/

Good Luck and don't hesitate to post if you have any other questions.
