The flywheel key is a crecent shaped woodruff key that is set into the tapered portion of the crankshaft. It only allows the flywheel to be set on a particular way.

What exactly do you mean, you pulled the whole coil assembly out?
Did smoke come out of the starter? 80/90 with the pull start under adverse conditions (compression tester loose for one) doesn't sound too bad.

well the coil plate with everything on it. On top of the Crank shaft it kind of looks like there is something that is groved into the crankshaft but whatever it was it is flush with the crankshaft wall. I think Im just going to try to trade or sell it. It is just frustrating as soon as you fix something something else breaks but I really apprieciate your help thank you very much and if you know anyone who may be interested let me know ill see if they would like to purchase it.

the flywheel key, if it was sheared off, you'll just need to replace it. it should stick out of the crank but if not then it is sheared. I wouldn't give up so soon on that motor.

Its just really frustrating because I had broke the wires to the plugs and the kill switch so I have to buy a whole new one and then my electric start wont even make a peep now. Any guidence on that would help alot. Is there a fuse for the starter or should I need a new one.

You could try and take a small diameter punch such as a nail set, set the tip on the top portion of the old key and star tapping on it in a slightly downward angle, this may dislodge it enough to get some plyers on it and remove it. Then replace with a new one.

Good Luck :)

That sheared key most certainly would have caused some starting/running problems. Having damaged the wires to the kill switch is probably why the starter wont make peep now also.

Make sure when you reinstall the flywheel that the nut is torqued to the proper setting, (40-45 foot lbs. I beleive on that motor) or you could end up with a repeat performance on the flywheel key.

Good Luck ;)

Yea that part laying all by itself is whats left of the key, as for the replacement parts you could try maxrules.com, twincityoutboards.com, americanoutboards.com, your local dealer may still be able to get some parts as well. They made that 18hp motor for a lot of years.

I'm not aware of a fuse, someone else may know though.

I can't tell if it is sheared from here, did you find evidence of it being sheared, i.e. metal pieces, under the flywheel. Also the key has to be positioned so that it's parallel with the non tapered part of crank, the straight edge of it lining up with straight edge of crank, if you know what it mean.

These little outboards are not that difficult to work on. It really helps if you have/get the OMC shop manuals. Cutting wires and removing parts without troubleshooting or knowing what they do is the long way to get to the ball park.
