I have changed seals gaskets, rebuilt carb, and thermastate and checkedthe impeller and waterpump. Changed the gear oil. I Ran the motor in a garbage can with a little bit of fuel and oil. Ran great. no prob. Took it to the lake the first time and I cranked it and it started then killed. I looked over everything but it wontcrank now. Could it be that I put to much oil in the fuel. I wont even come close to cranking now. Can anyonegiveme any Ideas.

What do you mean by, it won't crank over? The flywheel won't turn, or the engine simply will not start?

Go to the Engine FAQs forum, Dude.

Do the troubleshooting in "Outboard wont start".

Good luck. :)

I'm still lost! Will that engine start with the rewind starter? Do you have an engine problem, or is it with the electric starter?

Okay, from what you're saying the engine is an electric start, the starter will turn the motor over but it refuses to start, at least I think that's what you're trying to say.

You can find the fuel/oil mix ratios in the Engine FAQ's page. Make sure you get it right because this is very important, put too little oil and you'll ruin your engine.

I'd first take a look at all of the plugs. Pull them out, inspect them, then connect them to the plug wires and leave them touching metal. Crank the engine over. Make sure you have a nice hot spark for each plug. If you do, try squirting a little bit of fuel mix into the cylinders before you put the plugs back in. See if the motor starts now. If it starts but dies out after it used up the fuel in the cylinders, then we've narrowed it down to probably just a fuel problem. If it doesn't start at all, you may have just something stupid wrong or it's possible that you have bigger problems.
Definatley do what JB said though before you do anything else.

Well I checked the spark plugs and got no spark what so ever on both they look fouled but not experienced enough to know for sure. If I get new plugs do you thing it would work.

I also tried to put a screw driver in the wires and hold it next to the block and got no spark. Now Im getting really worried.

You may have a bad set of coils or condensers. It's not the end of the world, don't freak out. Change out the plugs if they looked fouled. I remember your posts from before but I don't remember what kind of maintenance you've done on it other than what you mentioned at the beginning of this post. Have you even looked under the flywheel yet?

EDIT:It may be from all that snow you got today. You watch, I'll have lingering motor issues when the snow gets to me.

Disconnect the two wires that come down from up under the flywheel and see if spark returns. This will rule out a faulty kill switch or improper wiring, etc.
If spark doesn't come back, the problem must lay underneath the flywheel. Could be a broken flywheel key, blown crank seal, etc. Either way you'll have to pull it. Use a puller that acts on the three screw holes near the centre of the hub.

I use a beefy automotive "Harmonic balancer puller" with three 1/4"-20tpi grade 8 bolts. Any other method leads to the destruction of the flywheel or crankshaft.
Don't get too concerned. Parts for the ignition system are suprisingly cheap (for outboard parts) and readily available.

I havent looked under the flywheel yet I just did lots of preventative maintance. I confused of the two wires I pulled to two wired off the plugs and tried to see a spark with the screw driver and the block. Is that what your talkin about.

Paul's talking about wiring for kill switch, not spark plug leads. Is there a kill button on the motor? The wire's ground the magneto cutting off the spark. Could be why you suddenly have no spark to both cylinders.

Before you do any of this, buy new plugs and see if you get a spark then. You could even use any spark plug that fits into the wires, as long as you don't put them in. If you still don't get a spark, then you have an ignition problem.
To test the plugs, pull them out, reconnect them to the wires, and leave the metal contacting metal on the block. Then turn the engine over. You should get a hot blue spark.

the two #14 wires that go up under the flywheel are routed to the kill switch, connecting or grunding them shorts the ignition and will prevent spark.

they should be black and black /yellow if I remember right

Re: 1964 18 hp evinrude start prob

Ok I know what wires your talking about I didnt get the two new spark plugs yet but I disconnected the two wires to the kill switch and put a screw driver in the lead and held it next to the block tried to start and no spark did the same with the spark plugs on the leads but I held those on the block. Still no spark I pulled the gear off the fly wheel but dont know how the pull the flywheel off. I think and Ive not been messing with boat motors very much. But is it magnetically charged with the magneto. And Do I have to get the Puller because of that.

Put the ring gear back on the flywheel exactly where you found it. It's important that you line it back up because the flywheel ring often has balancing holes drilled in it. Look for some tell-tale marking on the ring gear. Perhaps around the little notch for the emergency start cord.
You must use the proper puller. You will be suprised how tight that flywheel is. When re-installing the flywheel it's critical the nut is tightened to 40-45ft/lbs.
You should be able to draw sparks 1/4"-3/8" long off the spark plug lead. Don't expect any more than that.

If you don't have a service manual yet, now's the time.

what shall I replace. SHall I replace the Motor Coils? What are the other possibilities that it might be?

Re: 1964 18 hp evinrude start prob

Won't know until it's off. The coils are simple - if they're cracked replace them. They're only about $15USD each from Iboats. But it is unlikely both would go at the exact same time. So I'm thinking of problems common to both ignition systems (top & bottom).
If the flywheel key is sheared, you just replace it and refit the flywheel to the crankshaft. Usually the cause of this problem is an improperly torqued flywheel nut.
Another possibility is a bad top crank seal, which will blow oil all over the ignition system and dirty the points.
All these things are pretty plain to see. While it's off you may want to carefully look over the spark plug wires and see if they're due for replacement. The points need periodic adjustment so the puller is a worthwhile investment anyway.

What does the Flywheel key look like
I pulled the whole coil assembly out I guess I will have to buy a new one I did a compression test and each were between 80 and 90 Psi. I had to use the crank rope because when I used the started I inserted the compresion tester to far in the cylider and The start must have burt out or something. i dont know. Im about to take the motor and pitch it in the Garbage.
