I started it up and while it runs it clunks. Purrs fine then clunk and it does it over and over. The shifter is weird also but that i have figured is just the shift linkage. It looks like this.

I want to know what this clunking could be. Could it be a bad plug? I want to get on the water asap. The shifter problem I plan to take to the local shop.

ok thanks i'll try that. My father and I have figured that the problem with the shifter may be a bushing. Could this be the problem? You can't view it from the pictures and we also thought that the noise may be from the engine not being warmed up?

ok lets figure out if it's the gears of the engine. have you had it in the water, or are you testing in a tank. if its idling and running fine an then sort of misses a beat, coughs, it's the carbs.

Re: 1964 18 horse

I took it out on the water this weekend, and after it gets warmed up the clunk goes away. The shifter problem I haven't had fixed yet because it doesn't jump out of gear or make any noises. The clunk while warming up happens in all gears so its not the gears clunking I know that because once it warms up it stops. I'm also wondering can I just buy some carb cleaner and clean it out without taking it off because I really don't want to mess with it all that much. Like the jet spray out of a pressurized can?

The gears were replace last summer because of a lil mishap with leaving the motor in the water to long and old seals or something like that.

take the carb off, clean it out and reassemble with a rebuild kit. it's a very simple carb, also a lawn mower carb.
