Re: 1963 Mercury 500 50hp

I sprayed the Diamond Archive clear coat on Thursday, now to wait till next Thursday to start reassembly. The shine of this product is amazing.

I also stripped the cowl and faceplate with Aircraft Stripper, took 5 applications to get it off.

Painted the cowl and faceplate over the weekend while waiting on the clearcoat to cure.

KROIL, I put it on every bolt and up the exhaust then let it sit for a week. Not one bolt broke and I removed each with a 1/4" drive ratchet.

I did not do a compression test until I started the tear down. The engine was heavily fogged when I did do it,giving false readings.

where do u get kroil???????

Re: 1963 Mercury 500 50hp

I buy it at Champion Shooters Supply when picking up supplies,
Solvents and Cleaners : Kroil

Or Brownells stocks it,
KROIL | Brownells

Midway USA,
Kano Kroil Penetrating Oil Bore Cleaning Solvent 1 Gallon Liquid

or direct fron KANO,
Penetrating-Lubricating Oils

I was introduced to this product by some competitive high power target shooters. This is now the only product I use to get fouling out of the shotgun bore and for a soak in the rifle bores. Turns out it also work well for its intended use as a penetrating oil. However there is a downside to this IT TAKES TIME TO WORK.....I just used it again on another motor. Put it on the area, tap withe metallic object to set up vibration and walk away for a week....exhaust bolts come out, Dyna Float bolts come out, flywheel pops off(after beating the crap out of the puller)...

We're getting closer to startup. Carbs are finished and in, distributor is in and will have Link-n-Sync done soon.

Whats the plan for the ol' Jet Star? Just putting it all back to as it rolled off the showroom? Same color, interior?

The Jet Star restoration will be a year long project.
New transom, floor, carpet, seats and dash will come before paint and trim. I did find an original era AirGuide flush mount compass and speedometer for her.

It's time to move on to a newer 500. Like a 64 or 65, you have the 63 model mastered. :) Good work, bgc. :thumb:

Re: 1963 Mercury 500 50hp

I learned a lot from your posts. Keep them coming bro!

Glad to hear that!
My goal is to put the information about the White Merc 500 out there so others can find it and learn what not to do...... Unfortunately my entire flotilla is in drydock. Gotta get one seaworthy so I can go fishin, next 500 is on hold till winter.

Re: 1963 Mercury 500 50hp

Gas/oil mix at 50:1 or even 40:1 is good for the older motor. I believe it's best to clean or replace fouled plugs than do a rebuild. Use a good grade of outboard oil from Castrol or Quaker State.
