Just bought 15' runabout with the 40hp Evinrude. First time on water everything fine for the first hours then started loosing rpms at WOT. Idle, slow - med speed OK limped home.

Checked plugs (NGK) - wet with slight carboning. What should they look like?

On my small 6hp Johnson, had similar problem and found replacing the fuel connections and fuel pump solved problem. Figuring something similar and would like some advice. Don't know much about this motor...yet. What diagnostics should I do? What components should I test/repair first? Are there some carb adjustments for high speed?

Prior to the rev loss, the motor ran beautifully - smooth with plenty of power. My thinking. The motor had sat for several years and the pump diaphragm (like my Johnson) became brittle and finally cracked through on our run. Thought?

Thanks

If a plug is wet...you're not getting good spark(or any at all) to that plug. Do a spark check on all cyls. You probably have a coil that went bad once it warmed up.

Thanks for the reply.

I read I need a good, blue spark to jump 3/8"....yes? BTW, where are the coils?
