two questions here: what is the best way to remove the screws that hold the throttle butterfly plates on? I see that they are staked on the backside. I've been covering the fuel holes and then using a small cut-off wheel on a Dremel tool to remove the staked end. Is there a better way?

Also, I bumped the side wall of the carb throat with the tool and now I have a slight scratch. Will this have an appreciable affect on performance? I have a few more carb bodies laying around that I could use, but I'd prefer to use this one since I have it cleaned and painted already. Thanks.

Why would you want to remove the plates to start with ? Normally get a good small file and file off the peened end and try diff screw drivers to remove. If that won't work use a good duck bill pliers and twist in the right direction and they should come out.

I ask the same question--why are you trying to remove the plates? Normally there is no need to. But if you must, the Dremel is the way to go. When you put it back together, you MUST safety those screws again. If one comes out and gets swallowed, the whole game is over. High strength Locktite will hold 'em.

If you do get the plates out just remember they only go back in the carb one way. You can use that same duck bill pliers to peen over the "new screws" after you install them.

Re: 1963 75hp Carb Questions

I have 3 carbs here, my original plus two parts carbs. Turns out that the best carb body that I have is from a parts carb but one of the throttle plate screws has a head broken off. I'm trying to get that throttle rod out and replace it with another. That's why I need to know the best way to remove the screws.

I know that the venturi locations are very critical and I bought a locating tool (thanks F_R) but I was wondering about that scratch on the sidewall. I'd post a pic but I can't get a good pic with my camera. I'm assuming that it won't make too much of a difference, but I just wanted to get a second opinion. It's not a major scratch, but it is there.

Lastly, which Loctite is best for resisting fuel? Thanks.

Re: 1963 75hp Carb Questions

For those who were wondering, once I took out the throttle rod, I noticed that the throttle return spring was broken. I didn't even notice it by moving the throttle but once I saw the broken spring, I realized that somebody in the past may have tried to take out the throttle rod to replace it. That might be why the screw head was broken off.

Boobie, you mentioned that the plates only go in one way, but I forgot to pay attention. I had a few pics but I can't quite see how they go in. I've created a new post to try to figure out which way those things go. I don't want to say that the parts manual is wrong, but I'm leaning that way.

There should be enough "witness marks" to ID how the plate is oriented.
