I am in the process of restoring a 1963 28hp Johnson and found a crack in the housing of the lower unit. Because of the age I cannot find the part, and was wondering if anyone would have it, or even a parts motor I could purchase to complete the restore? I look forward to you responses.
Thanks
Clayton

No doubt there are many good used ones around. However, whatever portion is cracked...... machine shops can "heli arc" (aluminum weld) the crack OR you can patch it yourself with the gray colored "MarineTex" (not the white colored), a epoxy material which dries to a surface harder than what one is patching. I've seen holes in blocks patched with this substance and the engine run for years afterwards and probably still running.

The crack is on the very bottom part of the housing by the prop that bolts onto the rest of the lower unit. Is this a sufficient fix that will hold in the future as Im bound to accidentally bounce/hit the bottom of the lower unit of the motor.

Sufficient fix?

The Heli Arc will hold up against anything.

The Marine-Tex fix would be questionable.

I didnt specify. Yes I know the Heli Arc would be the best option and strongest. I was referring to the Marine-Tex. I appreciate the input.

If there is anyone that has a quality lower unit for this motor please contact me as I would like to purchase one.
Thanks.

Place a free want ad on AOMCI.org - someone will have one. Very common lower unit used on big twins from the 50's and 60's with the single line water pump. Here's one I just saw on CraigsList:
