1963 10hp Shifting problem

I recently acquired a 1963 10 hp johnson to use for a kicker moter on my boat. The motor has been sitting in storage for 15 years. So far I have done tune up, replaced impellar and it runs great. IT WONT SHIFT INTO FORWARD. It will go into reverse, but it doesn't do a think when I move it to forward. Also it is a tiller style motor and I am not familiar with the shifting, when i move the tiller handle from start to shift it dies. I know it probably needs some carb work but I am running out of cash. Any ideas on why it wont shift into forward would be greatly appreciated.<br />Thank you

Welcome to the forum!<br /><br />Does the shift handle move into the forward position as it should, and then just just sits and revs up.<br /><br />You may have a clutch dog thats been totaly wiped out. and has no lugs left to catch forward gear. That would be kinda of unusual for someone to grind it down that bad. But mabey he got mad.<br /><br />They arent hard to change but you will need a manual.<br /><br />Another thing you mite look at is the big philips screw on side of lower unit, It holds the shifter cradel in place, If its been backed off it may have disconnected. But then if that were true you probably wouldnt have reverse either.<br /><br />Anyway you need a manual.<br /><br />Good luck!

thanks lee for the info<br />Yes the shifter does move into position but the prop doesn't turn at all. It is interesting you brought up the shifter cradle screw, cause when i took off the lower unit and put it back I had some trouble getting the screw to seat into the hole. I might have missed hole and passed under it or something. I'll check it out.<br />Thanks

It sounds to me like your shift rod has slipped out of the connector and the connector pushes down on the rod pushing it into reverse but won't pick it up into forward. I'd definitely check the shift rod connector. Be absolutely sure the groove in the shift rod is lined up in the lower connector hole. If not, you could have major problems with the threads on your bolt. If that still doesn't fix it (I think it will), then check for adjustment on the shift lever.
I don't believe your clutch dog is bad from what you described.

Have you checked through the shift rod service window that the rod is actually connected properly? If its like my QD-21, shifting in reverse moves the rod down, forward moves the rod up, so if it is improperly connected you may be able to push the rod down into reverse but not pull it all the way back up when you shift into forward.
