I'll be selling a lot of stuff off of it to make cash to buy the right stuff. There's no doubt there been some switcheroo's going on. I'll bet there was a nice mercury on there that someone decided the needed. The Evinrude has good compression, and I fancy myself to be a decent mechanic. So, we'll see, I guess my first inclination is to take the Evinrude down to the basement for a rebuild or good going over and put on a stern-mounted, 40-pound electric trolling motor and a deep cycle battery. There's a 90-acre lake about a mile from my house. The poor dear hasn't been on the water for over five years and it's about time she's got her fins wet again! There's plenty of time to get her prettied up. Right now, I'm gonna have some fun with her.

Re: 1962 Starcraft Stardust - Should I go for it???

I'm starting to dig into this thing, and it's starting to look like I got what I paid for. Don't get me wrong. I really like the looks of the boat, and it's got good bones. The motor, the one the guy told me that he was told ran. I was able to get in touch with the previous owner. He told me it never ran and they don't have a title for it. You gotta love it! I'm thinking I should do a few checks on it first to see if it's worth fixing. If it is, then I'll do a title search on the motor after I get it running. Advice anyone? It's a 1965 33 hp Evinrude Ski Twin. The only thing I know about it so far is that it's not ceased and it looks pretty clean. I have a manual. What's the best wat to get started on these things?

I believe they are good motors and I think you can still get parts for them. Definitely try to get it running but don't put much money into it mainly because it's a little small for your boat. This link may help http://forums.iboats.com/engine-fre...kening-sleeping-outboard-boatbuoy-158086.html The guys in the Johnson/Evinrude forum here are great. Ask any specific questions there.

Thx EZ! I like the approach, gradual and straight forward. I'm always irritated by fancy tech talkers that try to elevate themselves by talking big and using confusing language. This guy doesn't seem to be of that bent.

I've hear they were good motors too. My plan wasn't to fix it up to be my prize for pushing around the crew. I mean to get it purring and looking good for someone else who'd like to help me put the right motor on. The other thing I heard was that parts are fairly common for this motor. One last thing, I have a big Tupperware full of old and some unused Evinrude parts from the same motor. I think it was a 68 as apposed to a 65.

Oh yeah! Nice stuff boys. I can see I'm going to have to start building a nice little bookmark (favorites) library. The internet... You start clicking and what not, then you wished you could back to see this and that and you never find it again. Been there, done that. LOL! Check out the price list I found on the old 65 Ski Twin, $604.00.

Some free advice. Never, never, never, never look at old price lists. It's enough to make you :puke: when you see original prices. LOL

Re: 1962 Starcraft Stardust - Should I go for it???

Well, I'm no expert. That's for sure. I'm learning fast though, I think. Never buy a boat in the winter without something to thump the transom with. Truly, the boat looks very sound. And I did knock on the transom quite a bit. Maybe, with a hammer, I may have been able to detect the dreaded thud at the very extreme port/starboard sides of it. Maybe, I wouldn't have. After all, everything was frozen. That's my lame excuse for missing it, and I'm sticking to it! Now that everything has thawed, you can squeeze the wood at either side of the transom just above the ends of the splash well, and they're definitely a bit soft.

I guess the good news is that we live quite a ways from the closest big motor lake, and 90% of the time we'll be on a beautiful 95-acre lake about a mile down the road cruising around with an electric trolling motor sightseeing and fishing. We'll be tired of that by the end of the summer. Then I can have the 33 hp done, sold and replaced with a 50 hp. That should be done just in time for winter. I can go into transom mode over the winter.

So what am I asking for today? What size trolling motor should I get? I think I'll get a used one from Craigs... I'll just have to wait it out until the right one comes along and then pounce on it! Crown Batteries, I heard they were very good at making deep cycles, has their corporate office a few miles from me. The guy there said I could get a 24T or a 27T for just over $100. That sounds reasonable, if their quality is as good as I've heard they are. I heard their plates are 0.23" thick! The 27T-1000 has a rating of 95 Ah. Here's a link the their spec sheet:

This one is more specific:

Any comments are welcome!

Welcome aboard and good luck on your project. That boat has probably been outside for an untold amount of time, so replacing the transom is probably in order. Some Starcraft's have the main section of the transom and two smaller pieces at the top. Those pieces are usually the ones that rot first. Not sure about your model.

The good thing is that replacing the transom is probably IMHO one of the easiest things to do.

As far as the motor goes, if you plan on replacing it, just keep looking until you find what you want. You will be surprised what shows up every now and then!

Others have commented that a 50 hp outboard is the right choice for the gas, and I read a 40 lb thrust for a 16' is I guess the minimum I should get.

36-40 lb. thrust is probably OK for pond putting. Or is that pond humming? And it will work when you put gas power on the back too.

As far as batteries, what ever deep cycle Wally World sells. Always worked well for me.

Re: 1962 Starcraft Stardust - Should I go for it???

I found a guy with a 75 Ah battery, a case and a 50-lb Minn Kota for $160. Not a great deal, but the motor is a good one, an Endura 50. a 75 Ah isn't bad, but who knows ho old it is... The one thing that kind of concerns me is the fact that it's a 42" shaft.

Re: 1962 Starcraft Stardust - Should I go for it???

That's exactly what I told the guy. $120 at the high end for the motor and the battery, for all I know, is basically scrap... So, $20 for the battery. Then he has some cheapo box for it. I don't know... $2 or $3? So, if I wanted to pay a lot for it, I'm at $145. He's at $160. Yeah. Thanks for helping me make up my mind. Sometimes I get the I-want-it nows and don't think too clearly.

I paid $75 for my foot controlled bow-mount (I realize that was a heck of a deal though).

Yeah! I'm not made out of money, obviously. That's the deal I need to wait for and pounce on!
