I just purchased a 1962 OMC deluxe. The engine is not being cooled. My owners manual shows a water discharge location around the tilt shaft housing on the right side. My tilt shaft housing area does not appear to have a discharge location and my bolt pattern for the tilt shaft housing is diffrent than the owners manual.

Where else might the water discharge port be located?

Where is the best place to start to trouble shoot this problem?

The water inlet is not clogged and water appears to be ciculating through the lower case. There appears to be some gear lube in the test tank after starting. I just ordered a service manual but I am anxious to start solving this problem

Re: 1962 OMC cooling problem

Welcome dw!!

Let's start with a hp. You posted none...just a year.

Water discharge...look on the midsection of the engine, that's the part below the lower engine pan, and on the back you will probably see a port. These are exhaust relief ports. During operation of the engine, a misty spray will come out of these ports.....not much but it should show some water. That's really the only thing you can see on the older engines.

If you think you are getting gear lube on the water after running, set the engine straight up and down for 5-10 minutes. Put a clean container under the lower unit and pull the drain plug. Not knowing when the last gear lube change was on this engine, I can only predict what you may see from the drain hole.

A couple drops of water is Ok...a steady stream of water is not OK. Black smelly oil means it's not been changed in a while. Also be aware of any shards of metal....bad news. Clean oil means that the lower unit is tight and Good to Go or someone has just changed the lube recently.

Good goin' on getting the manual. This will help you a lot in working on the engine.

This is a 80 hp i/o stern drive. Thanks for your response. The gear lube looked good when I first checked it, but as you said it could have been recently replaced. I'll check it again now that it has run in a tank.

OK dw....you need to post this thread in the I/O forum. This forum is dedicated to outboards. And don't forget to give the hp/year. Probably one of the Mods will move it for you so if you see this thread closed, take a look in the I/O forum.

Good Luck!
