1962 johnson super sea horse electragnetic

hi this is one of my outboards and i had points put in and i took it out on the upper hudson in the adirondacks it was running slow so i pushed the throttle forward all the way and the motor stopped moving and reved up way to high so i turned it off and then turned it on and tried to shift forward it did the same thing again but then it shifted into neutral too and then shifted into neautral and it worked then i shifted into reverse and it worked im taking it to my mechanic tommorow to fix it but i was just curious if it was something i could do.

If the motor bogged down and revved up, there's a good chance you have a spun hub on your prop. It may push the boat at slow speeds and in reverse, but will slip at attempts at high speed. You can scribe a mark across the back of the prop, take it for a ride until it "slips" and check the marks. If they don't line up, you have a spun hub. If it's not a spun hub, then you have a problem with the Electramatic shift, which could be a number of things.

Check oil in gearcase first. Check prop hub second. Check electrical to lower unit wires third. Don't jump to conclusions, do an orderly, sensible troubleshooting.

thanks guys but my mechanic told me its a coil in the lower unit and that luckily he has a lower unit he can stick on it but thanks! and btw what do you guys think this motor will do for speed on my 14 ft arkansas traveler

hey should i repair this motor or just junk it my mechanic is talking a couple hundred just for the coil and a couple hundred to put it in just curious what you guys would do cause i could always just get another motor

Those old electric shift motors were nice back in the day, but get VERY expensive to repair. Too many things to go wrong, and things will go wrong on 50+ year old motors. That's why I shy away from them. You can probably find a decent manual shift motor for the price of the repair. Or you could save some money by repairing it yourself if you're up to it. I'd probably buy a manual shift motor and part out the electric shift. You can get a tidy sum for all the good parts.

The electric shift is very good and very reliable.----Others have vastly different opinions.--------In my area it is an " easy fix " for sure.
