It had an ammeter at one time as the engine comes from the factory equipped with it. At some point between then and now, it was removed for some reason.... not a good reason obviously.

Ok, took advantage of the 60 degree days we had here and installed an ammeter, finished my lower unit, and repaired a bad spark plug thread on my port head and fired her up. Gentlemen, she... is... CHARGING!!!!!! Ammeter showed what I would expect from a not fully charged battery and took voltage readings at the battery and just before I shut her down after about 5 minutes of warming up, I was getting 13.8v. Thank you guys so much. Thank you F_R for your insight into the hanging wires, and thank you Joe for the color coded wiring diagram. I appreciate the heck out of your help! She's ready for the water! Now all I need is for spring to officially come... ha.

Well, I'm sure that we're all glad that your engine is actually charging as it should.... Thank God for color coded wiring. Keep in touch if problems arise.

That's great news. Those classic old motors from the 1950's & 60's will not die easily; they have to be murdered!

Understood.... Many of us here started out back in the early days when all that existed in the outboard line was engines with magneto ignition and mechanical shift. And as the years went by, it was easy for us to learn and memorize the one or two new features in the new models each year along with the probems that would eventually pop up with those improvements. That's what surfaces here... what's locked in memory.

Unfortunately as time goes by, us old timers either have our minds drift off to some foreign place or we reach that point where we become transported to that boat yard up there somewhere.... or down there, depending. :) Hopefully the majority of us will be able to stick around for another ten years.

Celebrated my 76th yesterday. Hopefully the big boat yard up there will be better than the one down there. Even if my job is scraping barnacles. Meanwhile, you are stuck with me here.

I second that. Congratulations! As my old polack family says, "sto lat!" No way you're allowed to go anywhere any time soon. I may have more stupid questions that only you can answer... Lol. Happy birthday, and thanks again!

Personally, at 80, I don't celebrate them any more. Just sticking around to see when engines go nuclear. Should be interesting!

Hey Joe and F_R, guess I'll have to respect my elders as Ma always said. I turned 74 in January. The golden years ?? BS. LOL

Another iboats.com Forum Hall of Famer checks in! You guys are making me feel young at 68 but, like used cars, I have a lot of miles on me. Thankful for another day on the green side of the grass!
