Hi, All.
I'm new to outboard maintenance.
I have a project motor and one of the first things I need to do is to remove the gearcase and check the clutch dog. The previous owner, a outboard mechanic says it was jumping out of forward gear in the test tank and he suspects the clutch dog.

Will I need any special tools for this job? I know I need to buy a gearcase kit. Also, I plan to change the impeller while I have the gearcase off. I read my manual and it sounds fairly straight forward. But I'm confused on the special sealer and lubricant the job calls for. Can someone recommend something off the shelf for this job? Also, can you recommend a gearcase lube? Btw, I have a FleetFarm and Gander Mountain near me if that helps. Any additional tips and advice appreciated.

thanks,
jasper

Use 80W-90 gear oil. That's the easy part.

Break down and buy a tube of the sealer. Whichever is called for in your book is obsolete and replaced by Schotchgrip #847. Rarely found in your local hardware store, it is available from an Evinrude dealer, or at a better price on-line from www.mcmaster.com.

OK, I'm ready to reassemble the gearcase.
I have the gearcase kit and everything seems straight forward except for changing the o-rings for the shift rod and drive shaft.
These o-rings are enclosed in the housing and need a special tool to remove. Since I don't have one, do have any suggestions on how to improvise, or should
I just leave it alone?
thanks,

Hey asdasc. Thanks for the thread.
Pretty clever tool for punching out the shifter o-ring. It really came out that easily?
Good job on the driveshaft as well,
but since you removed more than you intended to, did you have trouble finding parts? The 4 black pieces is the seal, correct?
I'm sure my gearcase seal kit only has the o-ring.

Yes, it popped out very easily. I actually have 2 lower units and did it on both once I realized how easy it was. The seal kit came with everything I needed, so no problems there. There was a speghetti, which is the seal between the skeg and rest of the lower unit, 2 seals that get inserted in for the propshaft seal, one for the shifter, one for the driveshaft, 2 for the lube screws, and one for the screw that holds the shifter lever.

Hi Steve,
in post#12, you used a seal puller tool on the driveshaft and the copper rings were pulled out and kinda damaged. I assume it was still reusable, but I was wondering if you found a better tool or technique the second time around on the driveshaft seal?

thanks for the info.

Re: 1962 Johnson 28hp gearcase removal

I have a question about a couple parts in the sierra gearcase seal kit #18-2686.
The following O.E. part numbers don't match my motor.
Can you verify they are the correct parts,
and where do they go?

(1) 18-2005 Oil Seal - replaces O.E. # 313284

(1) 18-7120 O-Ring - replaces O.E. # 307853, 322598

thanks,
jasper
