1962 Evinrude 18hp Compatibility with 1969 Evinrude 18hp

Hey everyone, I found a good deal on an electric start 1962 18 hp Evinrude in my area. My question is, is flywheel able to be removed from the 1962 and used as an electric start on the 1969? Also, are the lower units interchangeable?

The guy says that he does not have the wiring harness for the electric start, just seeing if I can make this work, thanks.

I can only say that we bought a new 18 hp. Evinrude in 1964, this was supposed to be a new improved version over earlier models as they moved to the 50:1 oil mix, not sure what other changes were made...

That would probably be a waste of time , because very often with different year models, different numbers were given to the very same parts from previous years

A 1962 and 1969 18 HP are exactly the same i think.----

Thanks everyone, I know that they changed from 24:1 to 50:1 and 1964 on the oil to gas mix but after looking pretty hard I am only able to see that as the main difference. Going to go look at her today and see if I can add it to the collection. I love the help here.

The change was done in the board room.-----Nothing was changed on the motors to run at 50:1 mix ratio.

In 64, OMC added a Tin Plating to the Pistons, supposedly to aid in the Engine Break In. Otherwise there is no differences in Bearings or Clearances, so 50:1 can be used. OMC actually issued a Bulletin back in 64 that their older engines could run 50:1 if Evinrude/Johnson/OMC Oil(TCW) was used.

I used a flywheel (with ring gear) from a 1960 Jonson 18 Hp and used it on a 1967 Johnson 20 hp, with an electric starter and bracket. Worked fine. I have also used 50:1 on a 1959 Evinrude Big Twin for 20 years. In 1964 OMC went from bronze bushings on small engines to all roller/needle bearings across the line. After that, the small engines could use 50:1. Same thing with the earlier 18/20's (pre 1964). I've run 50:1 in a 1960 18 HP Evinrude for years. You have to be careful with the Pre-64 small displacement engines. I did blow up a 1960 3 hp by running 50:1 instead of 24:1. Hope you bought it.

I used to think that, but the 64 5 1/2, and later 6hp still had Bushings for Crankshaft Bearings. OMC did spec 50:1 for them though
