I recently got a 1962 5.5 hp johnson model CD-19 S. I've got it running, and but it seems to run best with both high and low needle valves closed or close to it. I know the seats or bushings that the retainer nuts push against are missing, though I'm not sure that should matter. I've read here that the low end should be open 1.5 turns and the high end .75. When I do this it idles right down and run rough and usually quits. Even with them both closed it runs okay at high speeds but a little rough at low speeds. Any suggestions on what could be causing this?

Sorry about the long post and thanks for any help.
Also, the fuel line was missing when I bought it so I put a 3/8" line on there even though I know it's supossed to use a 5/16" line. Could this be part of the problem, maybe not enough pressure in the tank? I have had it on the lake once, and it ran good at high speeds but had trouble getting / keeping it started sometimes.

Welcome to Iboats, plamo!

1.5 and .75 are excessively rich but a good starting point. But the engine shouldn't run when they're threaded all the way in.

I think you'll just have to pick up a carb kit (from the local dealer since the aftermarket kit doesn't come with a new float) and rebuild that puppy (~$25). The engine will never idle near right without the packing for the mixture valves in place, and I strongly suspect the main nozzel gasket is leaking or missing between it and the carb bowl. Really, with the valves shut there should be no way for fuel to get to the engine so something in there must be leaking.

I don't think the fuel line is a problem at all. If that's a '62, it shouldn't have a pressurized tank - does it? On a 5.5hp I don't think it would matter if you used 3/16" line. :)

Have a look at Tom Travis' website where he's fixing up a 5.5hp:
http://www.outboard-boat-motor-repair.com/

Thanks for the quick response! I picked up a carb kit today and I will be installing it this weekend. No, my tank isn't pressurized but I wasn't sure if this bigger line could cause any problems (I don't see how, but I'm not the expert). Thanks for the help, hopefully I'll be posting on sunday how much better it runs!
