Hi,

This motor is a family hand me down from my Wife's Grandfather. I never met the man but my wife tells me he was quite fussy about maintenance. So I changed the coils and got it running but not running great. Tore down the carb and plan to rebuild it with a standard kit. 439071. Also, i noticed brownish milky ooze flowing out of some vent holes and making a mess. I just ordered a Lower Unit seal kit. I have basically zero experience with outboards and would appreciate any advice and cautions. I have no idea what looks worn and possible problem spots. I really want to bring this ole' girl back in shape and don't want to wreck it. I will try a post as many pictures as i can for you to follow along. Thanks, Matt

HI 2stix. Welcome to ibaoats. Great old motor. I used to have a '61 10 hp Johnson myself. All and all the gears look good, but check the clutch dog (ring btwn the gears). It has two "ears"/lobes on it which can become worn over time causing the motor to slip in/out of gear while underway. If you should find it worn, you'll need to replace it. With some luck it will still be in good shape. Here are some great links to help you give your motor a tune up from top to bottom. The LU reseal link is for a different model, but all of the steps are the same. You can get any routine parts (carb kit, tune up kit, LU seal kit, etc....) you may need right here at iboats. Holler if you get stuck.

Thanks a lot! I was fortunate to find the clutch dog like new. I have all the seals out of the LU and the carb sparkling clean. Patiently waiting for my new parts so I can get started on the assembly! Keep you posted

Well I got everything assembled and running. However, I noticed this grey/beige ooze coming out the 2 tiny
Vent holes. I checked the lower unit gear oil and it's a perfect honey colour and no water came out. Should I be worried that the LU didn't seal properly?? Or is there some other problem?? Thanks, Matt

probably just old 2 stroke "crud" getting diluted and washed out of the exhaust areas then draining through the drain holes

+1. Stinky, old gray oil is actually normal. It's just unburnt fuel/oil mix that is mixed with water in the exhaust. It's particularly noticeable in a test tank, but will virtually disappear on the open water. They don't call these old motors "2 smokes" for nothing. As long as the gear oil isn't milky/cloudy you're ok.

Thanks for the info guys~ I really have to get this old girl out and stretch her legs. I bet it hasn't ran wide open for 20+ years. Oh, I did check compression and got 85/90 psi. I assumme thats fine? Thanks

compression's fine...read up on the Decarbing Procedure in the sticky file..Top Secret Files...your motor may benefit from this
