1961 merc 60 2 stroke no start

just bought a 61 merc 60 kiekhaefer 6hp. i have spark with a spark tester but no spark with the plugs that came in it. they are autolite 303's. tried plugs from advanced auto parts champion 841. still had no spark. points look good and wiring looks good. have dvom hooked up, one end in plug boot and while holding the other to ground i did get shocked... not sure whats going on... plz help.

Rig up a tester that has an open air gap of 1/4" , good spark must jump that gap.

sanded and cleaned points, sprayed off with brake cleaner, adjusted points and blew with air... great spark!. first time with an outboard engine, and a 61' at that. still have alot to learn.. thanks for the help and anymore u can provide.

So did it start? I did a ton of work on older outboards when I was first starting. Funny thing is when you break something on the older motors, often it is more expensive to replace the part than on the newer ones.

What other help would you like ?-----I have worked on a lot of these motors and have 3 of those white 6 HP motors in the collection

yes i got it running now. problem im having now is that the lower unit is broken and need to find one. also after running it for a few seconds i wanted to get it in a bucket of water to make sure it's pumping. nothing. so i will have to investagate the cooling system.

Those lower units look just like the newer ones.------Except the position of the rear mounting stud is different and newer black ones do not fit.--------Time to find a white donor motor.--Not easy to find a good one.
