I want to try again but do it right this time. I have the fly wheel off and going to replace the wires then put back together. On the coils the post that you are suppost to make them flush with are worn shuld I line up with the worn spot or as if they where not worn? the point are supost to be .20 is their a trick to this? and any other hints? Now when I put back on the fly wheel I know to torque to 100-105Lbs any sugestions on holding the fly wheel so I can torquce that much?

The coils must be flush with the bosses. You can see the illustration in your manual.

The points should be set at .020", not .20. Turn the flywheel until the cam for the points is at it's highest point, then set the points, using a feeler guage, which should slide through the points with a slight pull. Before replacing the flywheel, put a piece of clean heavy paper between the point contacts and pull it out with the points closed to clean off any oil that may be on there. You do not want to have to pull the flywheel to clean the points again.

You can hold the flywheel with an automotive flywheel holder. They're available at any auto parts store. Use care when doing this. If you can get a helper, do so. If not, make sure the flywheel holder is fully engaged with the teeth on the flywheel gear.

Another method is to take a piece of 3/16" thick flat bar stock (any hardware store) about 18-24" long, and drill it to match the mounting holes for the recoil starter assembly. Wrap the long end with duct tape or something, then bolt it to the flywheel with 1/4" cap screws, 1/2-5/8" long. That will give you a solid handle to hold the flywheel while you use the torque wrench.

How did the support posts get worn? They aren't supposed to touch anything. Is the plate flopping around, allowing them to contact the magnets?

Just turn the shaft till the points are fully open and adjust the gap to .020". Yeah, I know, your .20 was a typo.

The proper way to hold the flywheel is with a flywheel holder tool. Or a strap wrench. Now don't you guys swoon, but you can also stick a big screwdriver between the starter and flywheel gears (starter gear in down position). I haven't bent a shaft...yet. But don't come crying to me if you do.

I just fixed a 40 that had a sheared off key. All else was ok. I used a big screwdriver between the flywheel ring gear and the top of the block and held on real hard while the wife pulled the torque wrench to 105 lbs. It worked fine. As long as the engine are electric start and there's a ring gear, they're easy to torque But if you have a smaller engine without a ring gear it gets a lot tougher!
