I have my Dad's 1961 Gale 5 hp Model #5D19B, Serial #828246. It's been running every year since it was born, a one-pull start until August 2007 when I needed a tow home. My local outboard mechanic says it needs a water pump, but he doesn't know where.
In another thread, FR suggested the following part numbers for a 1958 model (5D15B) Gale Buccaneer. I am wondering if the parts for my 1961 motor are the same.
391391 complete water pump kit.
379764 just the water pump impeller if you are cheap.
303467 powerhead gasket if your motor is mounted on springs
306205 powerhead gasket if your motor is mounted on rubber
303355 gasket for carbon seal plate
303347 o-ring for carbon seal
FR also suggests: "You have to pull the powerhead. While you are ordering parts, get a new 303355 gasket and 303347 o-ring for the carbon seal. You will know what I am talking about when you get in there. Don't ignore this advice!! That is a vital assembly and will destroy the motor if it leaks.
Parts are available from your Johnson or Evinrude dealer." (Are these Johnson-Evinrude part numbers?)
"If you go for the complete pump kit you will find it is different than the old one. Don't worry, it's better."
FR also suggested: "The 1961 is similar; it's mounted on rubber, so takes a 306205 powerhead gasket." (I'm worried about the word "similar" - will the parts for a 1958 water pump - or the kit - fit the 1961 water pump? FR can you help?)
That sounds like great advice, and being a girl I need all the advice I can get! I finally figured out how to post my question, now - can anyone tell me where to get these parts? Thanks to you all.
