When I got this motor only the #1 plug was firing and #2 had no spark.Pulled flywheel and narrowed it down to bad set of points on #2.Changed points and gapped both #1 and #2 to 0.20 as stated. Now both plugs firing and started motor up.Runs rough unless you give it a little gas.Water muffs on and ran it for 10 min and then it died when i tried to let it idle.Try to restart and no spark to either plug now ??????Any ideas.

when was the motor last run, prior to this. if the coils look like these they are toast.

now that the plugs are firing how about a carb rebuild. if the coils are not new then i'd replace them as well, no need to get stranded on the water:)
good luck

OK, how many ft/lbs torque did you put on the flywheel nut? Didn't use a torque wrench??? It sheared the flywheel key.

Here is the procedure:
Flywheel and shaft tapers must be clean and dry.
You must use a torque wrench and tighten the nut to 60-65 ft/lbs if it takes a 7/8" wrench, or 100-105 ft/lbs if it takes a 1 1/16" wrench.

Allowing the key to shear oftens wrecks the flywheel and/or the crankshaft tapers.

Right you are FR. The key doesn't stick out very much and 60 ft/lbs is about all I could get with a short johnson bar. 100 ft/lb is quite a bit of torque. You have to have something to hold that flywheel to get it torqued that much.

You were right---the key sheared and the flywheel moved off location.I pulled the flywheel today and replaced the key.Checked all parts and all looked ok except the shear key.Should be able to try and fire it up tommorrow and let you know if I have spark back. Thanks for responding to my post when I was in need of some answers.

Ok---this morning I finished putting flywheel and everything back together. The motor sat with a seafoam and gas oil mixture in it for 2 days.Hooked up the water muffs, insert key, choke on and fire-----we have ignition.Fired right up,smoked for about 2min quite a bit from seafoam in motor and then cleared up and idles good. Thanks to all from this site. Now time to rebuild carb, fuel pump, and change impeller.

I am curious if you know what compresion your motor have, mine is the same engine like yours but 1960 and I have ~100psi, I can t make it to idle nice and steady and I am trying to see if is not because of compresion .
