Yeah, the pinion bearing was a tad small. Run it without adequate lube and it wears faster than the larger bearings in the old 10 that used the 15-18hp gearcase. When the bearing wears, the gear moves aside, changing the gear tooth clearance and it is all down hill from there.
The way I see it, the bearing was adequate, but the operator...well, I don't know.
I was thinking that perhaps the drive shaft or pinion bearing/bushing was a little weak in the 58's which they later beefed up a little and were at least decent in the later models---if you kept water out.
