Hi,

I am new to the forum and was checking on restoration details for my 1960 Lightwin 3034. I have a little confusion regarding the fuel/oil mix. The decal for my engine advises on a half pint of SAE30 oil to the gallon, and that's a 16:1 mix if my maths are correct, but I see lots of references to 25:1. Is there any definitive advice out there?!!

On another point,I am concerned about the effects of the salt water on the cooling passages. I am unfamiliar with the flushing port on the engine, as my British Seagull does not have this feature. There is a small screw covering a flushing port which is situated under the engine. Could you offer any advice on how this is used? After removing the screw, do I simply press a water hose nozzle to the port and allow water to flow into the port? Should the engine be running when I do this? Do I run the engine in a water tank as I flush through the port? Any advice welcome as I have yet to get to know the engine, and its use will be mainly in sea water.....

Kind regards,

Peter

Howdy, Peter.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Fuel mix for your engine has been bounced up and down from 16:1 to 24:1 and back. Currently 16:1 seems more popular, but I used 24:1 in my Johnson equivalent for years without harm. Everyone does agree that the oil should be TC-W3 rated outboard oil.

I don't think there is a flushing port on your engine. I would flush it by running it in a fresh water tank of some sort.

Good luck. :)

There is actually a flushing port on the side of the motor, but I have never used it. I just run it in a trash can of water. I don't see how the port on the side of the motor could provide water to the impeller, so maybe it is for static use only.

I would run 16:1 in that motor, just as the instructions on it say to. Following mixing instructions properly only prolongs the life of your engine. 24:1 mix is recemended on motors in those years, that were built with needle bearings in the crank and rod assemblies, which the Lightwin/JW's have not. But that's just my opinion.
