1960 Highway Products P-14 "The Little Red Boat" or "The Little Deuce Coupe"

Sold The seaswirl so I've been focusing again on my Grandpas P-14. He bought it new in Canby Oregon in 1960. It wasn't seaworthy for a long time but it's back on the water! When he bought it it had a 35 horse outboard on it. My grandpa immediatly cut the transom out and beefed it up to support a Merc 1000. I want to see what you guys think.

1969 Merc 1000

Took it out to the lake yesterday. Started right up without a fuss at all. Idled smooth. Idled in gear smooth. Jumped out of the water. Took it for a few spins around the lake. Shut it off. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. Fired right back up and idled in gear at a nice low rpm. Shut it back off and went for a swim. About 30 minutes later we hop in and it will not start. Coughs and sputteres until it idles (kinda rough). Give it some throttle and it chokes. Finally after playing with it for 30 minutes we get it started and up to plane. After a lap or 2 around the lake its back to running great again. Idles smooth in neutral and forward. But I cant let it sit for more than 20 minutes. Bottom 2 carbs have slow drips out of bottom brass plug. Testing stator today. Anything else I should test?

I rewired motor and harness and removed the carbs, cleaned and adjusted floats and did the link and sync. Mixture screws are about 2 turns out but havent been fine tuned. Going to test the stator here in a bit

In the mean time, here's some glassic porn:cool:

It's unfortunate that your grandfather left you this derelict mess to deal w/ & a bad motor to boot. I'll gladly let you pay me $50 to haul it off for you so you won't have to see such a wreck darkening a spot in your yard. Ok? :watermelon:

Nice looking little red rocket w/ that Merc 1000 I bet it feels like it's doing 50+ at WOT. Nice to keep it in the family & getting some use.

Congrats & welcome to iboats.

Thanks! He didn't quite leave it to me in the condition you see here... Needed motor work and I repainted as close to the original color as possible. Its come a long ways but still needs to go a lot further. At least he turned it into a hot rod for me! They used to tow ski pyramids with this boat. I also have numerous newspaper clippings from the 60's with pics of this boat in slalom tournaments with my grandpa at the helm. My next investment is going to be some nice 60's era Airguide gauges. So if anybody knows where to find a nice Tach, Speedo and water temp gauges let me know!!!
