Bought this motor figuring it would need simple stuff to make it run. Got the usual "It ran last time we used it".

Nope. No spark... Rotted coil. Replaced both and condensers. Points looked good. Got spark- Still not starting.

Rebuilt Carb. Have fuel getting to the carb. No start.

Replaced the plugs. Tried to start- nada... Removed the plugs- dry as a bone.

What did I miss?

Try spraying some premixed fuel directly in the carb and see if she fires.

By chance did you replace the float?? Was it cork or plastic? Also be sure the low speed jet is open enough or it won't do didly. Last, tank vented??

I didn't replace the cork float- it was in decent shape. Opened the jet 1.5 turns. tank is vented....

Try what lindy46 suggested. It sounds like you're not getting gas, if your plugs are dry.

May not matter, but if you replaced the needle valve and seat the newer ones have a rubber tip that supposedly can stick unless a clip is attached to the float.

I installed that little bugger- the clip. Took me 20 minutes after a run to walmart for my first pair of reading glasses to get it on properly. Gonna try the gas in the carb and see.

Now the jet? that runs up thru the middle of the float... I put it in till it stopped. Is this correct or is there an adjustment to be made to it?

That is the "main nozzle". Screw it all the way in, snug. So....have you checked the compresson or not?

Wet plugs indicates flooding. It is not supposed to be flooded.

No- haven't checked compression. Wouldn't it attempt to start even if the compression was low?

I attempted the gas in the carb. Nothing.

On the top of the head <above the plugs> there is a reservoir that is covered. It's got a gasket and the cap is secured with 3 screws. the inside of this is rusted and bone dry.... ????

If you have spark, it should at least pop even if compression is low, when you spray premix directly into the carb. That reservoir is where the thermostat should be.

Looks like this one is above my pay grade. Time to take it to a mechanic.
