After finally getting my 1960 Lark II running I noticed a small weep hole on the starboard side of the lower unit. I had checked the oil condition and level months ago and never noticed it. This hole does not show up on any of the exploded diagrams and is not mentioned (that I can find in the manuals I have). There is a lot of milky oil flowing from it with lots of carbon like debris after our barrel test.http://[URL=http://s1194.photobucket.com/user/ssdale/media/100_4768_zpshkpvnp86.jpg.html]

Can't quite figure what I am looking at and what is the purpose?
Thanks,

Probably one of the most often asked questions. It is a drain hole, and it drains water and oil and goop and glop that comes from the exhaust. Also drains gear oil that leaks into the exhaust area (from the shift rod seal). But it does not go directly into the gear case itself.

Thank you all for the answers. Glad to hear it is not a problem. I will keep a close eye on the lower unit oil situation to see if water is getting in etc.. A rebuild would be expected, but other components of the motor were replaced when I acquired it, so there is a slim possibility the lower unit is in good shape. It is the smoothest shifting transmission compared to the 1965 Mercury I have. Time will tell.
Thanks again,
Dale
